CERAMIC CROWNS Sometimes a tooth is too badly damaged to be improved by a veneer, and it requires full coverage. Until recently crowns were made from metal with porcelain on top. Metal was required for strength but resulted in a ‘false’ look, due to the way it prevents light passing through (translucency), which is what occurs with natural teeth. Often a dark line was visible at the gum around the edge of these crowns.
Now ceramics are available, such as ‘Procera’, which are very strong and replicate natural teeth because they don’t require a metal layer. We use these almost exclusively now, creating lifelike appearances.
